Every walking group starts as "the Tuesday walk." At some point someone asks what you're called, and suddenly you need a name for the group chat, the T-shirts or the sign-up sheet for a charity walk.
This list has ideas for every kind of group: friends who walk and talk, neighbors on the morning loop, a ruck club that carries packs or weighted vests, a team for a walk for a cause and a team at work. We wrote every name ourselves. Take one as it is, or use it as a starting point and make it your own.
How to pick a name your group will actually use
The best name is the one people say without thinking. Before you vote, run your favorites through a few quick checks:
- Say it out loud. If it's hard to say in a sentence ("Are you coming to …?"), people will shorten it or stop using it.
- Type it into a group chat. Short, easy-to-spell names win. Skip clever spellings that autocorrect will fight.
- Picture it on a T-shirt. Long names get small. Two to four words usually fit.
- Check it isn't taken nearby. Search the name with your town, and look in local groups. You don't want walkers turning up at someone else's meeting spot.
- Keep it welcoming. A name that sounds fast or tough can put off women who are new. A name that sounds friendly invites people in.
- Stay clear of brand, team and charity names. Make up your own rather than borrowing one that belongs to someone else.
Can't decide? Pick two or three, walk with them for a few weeks and let the group choose. The name that sticks is usually the one people already use.

Ruck club names
If your group carries a little weight in a backpack or a weighted vest, you're a ruck club. (New to the word? What is rucking explains it.) These names use warm, everyday words for carrying, so they sound like a group of friends, not a boot camp.

Names for a walk for a cause or a team on walk day
A team name gives supporters something to cheer for and a reason to remember why you're asking. Many teams name themselves after the person or cause they're walking for. If you use someone's name, ask them or their family first.

Once you have a name: next steps
A name is a nice start, but the walks are what keep a group together.
- Pick one regular day, time and meeting spot, and keep it the same for the first couple of months.
- Choose a route the newest walker can finish, with a shorter loop if you can.
- Invite a few people you know first, then share the plan in one or two local places.
- Walk at a talking pace, so no one is left behind.
Our guide to starting a walking group covers each of these in more detail. For more beginner guides, browse Start Here.
We started RuckGirl to give women a simple, social way to carry for themselves and for something bigger. A group with a name you love is a good place to start.
